A linear, layered extension that provides essential social space alongside special moments of reflection and connection to a mature garden.
Designing Moments
A baby grand piano forms a definitive anchor in the design of the extension, creating an inviting moment of practicing against a backdrop of mature oak trees under dappled North light has been central to the design. This dedicated space is elevated above the formal dining area, the beautiful object of the piano providing a secondary, decorative function to the dining room.
Optimising the site
Incorporating the site's natural features - mature oak trees, a falling topography, and a sense of enclosure—adds depth and harmony to the design, creating a family home that is deeply connected to its context.
The mature tree line provides shade in summer, carefully positioned openings frame choice views whilst internal levels align with external topography to provide internal interest.
This layered approach provides intimate zones for varied activities, from relaxation to al fresco dining.
Materiality
A linear walled garden design concept, crafted with rich red brickwork and concrete detailing presents a seamless internal to external threshold. The design seeks to develop a natural and serene flow, linking interior and exterior spaces with materials that are warm, durable, and long lasting.
