Reinvigorating a tired but distinctive Home
Mid-Century Modern, 2024
Residence have designed an extensive retrofit and extension for this family home - a scheme which simplifies the bungalow’s layout, introducing essential social spaces and future-proofing accessibility requirements.
Retaining Character
The property is situated in a distinctive area of low profile single-storey dwellings which enjoy long views over an edge of town Golf Course. The area is characterised by 1960’s mono-pitch roofs, painted weatherboarding and brown brick.
The layout has been reappraised whilst retaining the existing mid-century character of the house. An intimate and cosy central reading area develops a social connection between adjacent vaulted kitchen, dining and living spaces. A series of fixed rooflights flood natural lighting across the depth of the floorplate.
Extending the Form
A steel framed pergola extends the mono-pitch form, providing an external partially covered entertainment space, whilst timber inserts develop solar shading and enhance privacy of the elevated terrace area. The landscaping design provides accessible links across the property, a direct access ramp from the frontage to the garden, whilst a meandering landscaped pathway connects the new terrace to garden below.
Creating Volume
The living room’s loft space is transformed into a vaulted ceiling offering a spacious sociable space, the new glazing system minimises internal/external thresholds, maximises daylighting and long views across the undulating Golf Course.
The pergola structure develops seasonal shadow-play, reducing overheating by limiting summer passive solar gain whilst incorporating winter gain for natural heating. A restoration approach to the original parquet flooring will provide a new lease of life, and is complimented with a new herringbone brickwork terrace.
