At the end of the Garden

Garden Room, 2024

Quiet space for working, thinking and doing was required for a family home in West Sussex.

An efficient lodge sits lightly in the garden without heavy foundations or carbon intensive structures; Solar cells and battery storage turns this structure into a vital energy hub for years to come.

A Simple Intention

A long garden invited the implementation of a small structure to help extend this small family home. The house itself was restricted in its growth by neighbours and access, a lightweight structure has been designed to sit within and become part of the garden. The primary driver on the project was efficiency, efficient use of materials, budget and carbon; this has been held central to a design process which itself has been modified and developed to respect a budget whilst delivering high quality design. The design takes inspiration from frontier properties of the American West, it is unashamedly self build and actively seeks a link with the surrounding garden space to provide a moment of peaceful isolation requested by the client.

Simple, off the shelf, materials have been combined with less conventional building techniques such as screw piles to make this project viable on a tight budget and without investing in heavy concrete foundations. Timber has been used wherever possible to lighten the structure and minimise carbon footprint.
