Creating a Cohesive Whole

Bourne Cottage, 2026

Unpicking multiple layers of development to provide a legible and comfortable home.

Multiple extensions, alterations and refubishments had lost the sense of a complete home. Residence have developed a plan that provides a natural flow and plenty of space for this growing family.

A Good Neighbour

Situated on the edge of a village in the South Downs National Park, Bourne Cottage exists on the border of the domestic and rural landscapes.

The proposal straddles these two worlds appearing comfortable as part of the rural vernacular and on a domestic streetscape.

The rear elevation borrows its language from local timber barns whilst to the front the existing cottage features are rationalised and renovated to give the house a new lease of life.

Positive Connections

The house itself has been reconfigured to provide a series of private, semi private and shared spaces to accomodate the various and diverse needs of a growing family.

These spaces take advanatge of the surrounding gardens and countryside with distinct views or external terraces offering a unique character to each room.

The result is a home that provides a natural connection between each of its rooms to its landscape.
