Within a Forest Clearing

Cheshire Forest Passivhaus, 2023

building responsibly and sensitively

A timber framed sustainable home connected to its forest context. Our clients wanted a home that is designed for now and the future whilst respecting a tight set of planning constraints.

Redefining the home space

Planning policy restricted the maximum amount of internal floor area that could be developed on the site. By challenging our definition of use, and how the clients intend to use space we have provided large areas of flexible space which can be repurposed for the developing needs of a family and a business.

Much of the space requested by the client did not need to be heated enclosed space, but did require weather protection. Working with an agricultural vernacular we could shelter and provide for these multiple uses without losing out on the key living spaces. Crucially these spaces then have an inherent and permeable connection with the forest context, bats and native birds can nest within the open roof voids; Deer and muntjack can roam across the open terraces.

Admittedly a very large home the endeavour has been to disrupt the typical approach of luxury house building to develop a typology which is sensitive to its architectural, ecological and environmental context. To build at a large scale in the current climate we must be responsible in our approach.

Building sustainably

When designing and building we have a duty to do this in a conscious and environmentally sensitive way, our clients shared this belief and so all decisions were directed to the find the most sustainable route possible.

The thermal enclosures are well insulated airtight and utilise low carbon methodologies; timber frame infilled with hempcrete insulation are cloaked in natural, local stonework, glazing is utilised where it will provide the most effect, a large lightweight overhanging roof limits solar gains in summer and invites the low winter sun to help heat the household.

Spaces of Character

Internally the design is intended to embed the woodland character to generate a true sense of place within the home. Timber has been used in various guises throughout, different treatments and finishes provides warmth and ensures the repeated use of wood doesn’t become overwhelming. With doors and windows closed one still understands they are surrounded and embedded in the woodland.

Moments of calm and peace are generated through simple tactile finishes and even top lighting through discreet rooflights. Each room gains a visual connection with the woodland through considerately placed windows and openings.
