A practical addition to a family home.
Simple, practical alterations make this family home work. Robust materials with considered detailing emparts a new character on a budget.
Under one roof
Based in a small Hampshire village the project brief was to improve the kitchen and ‘family’ spaces of this ex-local authority property. A small rear extension was designed to provide a modest open plan kitchen overlooking the garden and nearby listed Church.
A restricted budget directed us to limit the square metreage of the extension and focus our attention where it was most effective. This lead to a roof form that projects beyond the line of the kitchen providing a covered, multi purpose external space. This area now performs a role of boot storing, wet suit drying, dog washing and morning coffee drinking.
A pragrammatic solution
Internally Residence worked hard to understand how the family use their space (and would like to use their spaces) to decide on the changes that would have the most benefit to all.
Structure was considered early and left exposed to minimise costs on finishing trades. Cooking and dining spaces are precisely planned to make the most of the space added to the house.
Secondary internal spaces were utiilised to maximise storage and provide opportunity to ‘shut away’ mess when neccesary. This resulted in a core that works hard for the house providing a pantry, utility and shower room all within easy reach of the rear entrance.
