Reusing, Upgrading and Reimagining
New Forest Retrofit, 2023
small carbon footprint, low running costs, contemporary finish
Reuse has been central to this redevelopment of a large family home in the New Forest. Providing contemporary, comfortable living accommodation with minimal environmental impact.
Embracing Context
Our client purchased a large outdated 70’s family home on a beautiful site, occupying an enviable forest edge condition. Residence appraised the existing home and its context to provide a sustainable and sensitive redesign.
Historically ‘Encroachment Cottages’ were common in the New Forest. Originally established on marginal land, on the basis that a right of possession was established if a house was erected on common ground overnight and had fire in the hearth between sunrise and sunset.
This convention provided a narrative link between the redeveloped house and the existing property, retaining the heavy structure of the house and a central hearth could anchor the new home in its context whilst addressing the issues of the current house. Re-insulating and cladding the house to provide warmth and comfort; new stonework walls then establish the enclosure and provide tactility.
Limiting footprint
When designing and building we have a duty to do this in a conscious and environmentally sensitive way, our clients shared this belief and so all decisions were directed to the find the most sustainable route possible.
The thermal enclosures are well insulated, airtight and utilise low carbon methodologies; natural insulation, local stonework, and high performance glazing installed where it will provide the greatest effect. The entrance is announced by a dramatic void providing views through to the forest behind, a large lightweight overhanging roof limits solar gains in summer and invites the low winter sun to help heat the space.
Texture and Tone
Internally the design is intended to embed the woodland character to generate a true sense of place within the home. Timber has been used in various guises throughout, different treatments and finishes provides warmth and ensures the repeated use of wood doesn’t become overwhelming. With doors and windows closed one still understands they are surrounded and embedded in the woodland.
Moments of calm and peace are generated through simple tactile finishes and top lighting through discreet rooflights. Each room gains a visual connection with the woodland through considerately placed windows and openings.
Enhancing the local ecology
At the heart of our landscape design philosophy lies a commitment to harmonising with the natural world. Simple naturalistic planting of native species and local natural materials, provide a delicate integration with the environment. An existing swimming pool has been transformed and planted into a central reflection pond. The result is a landscape that feels timeless and rooted in place, this will enhance biodiversity while offering a serene, inviting space that truly belongs to its beautiful setting.
