A Traditional Family Home
Lane End, 2025
Residence have developed an extensive renovation and replacement ‘wrap-around’ extension for this period family home. A scheme which simplifies the layout by introducing and implementing two key axis - redefining thresholds for informal social areas and formal entertainment spaces.
The Existing Dwelling
A rather handsome 1900’s Edwardian Villa which contains original features such as stained glass windows, timber sash windows and a bay window are still present. Whilst other architectural features have been removed or covered as part of previous ‘modernisation’ works which happened during the mid-90’s.
Retaining the Original Dwelling
The removal of a significant ‘wrap-around’ side and rear extension, which was an addition to the ground floor in the mid-90’s. The resulting layout is detrimental to the use of house, several ‘inner rooms’ have been formed providing poor circulation, weakening original features and hampering links between the house and its surrounding garden.
Defining the Site Axis
The implementation of these ‘cardinal’ axis will form a strong framework to develop spaces which flow and function naturally, whilst gaining natural views through the house and beyond. These two axis align with the compass points and have been treated as essential to the conclusive design work.
Populating the ‘Cardinal’ Axis
The composite design elements are brought together as one and tested in the diagram to ensure the two cardinal axis are respected, and preserved. This forms the principle of development to the properties ground floor refurbishment and wrap-around extension.
